Miss California 2009 - Carrie Prejean

Carrie Prejean, Miss California 2009, was runner up in the 2009 Miss USA pageant. Prejean rose to prominence when she answered a politically-charged opinion pageant question by doing the unthinkable - giving her honest opinion.

Carrie Prejean was at the 2009 Dove Awards, and I had the opportunity to meet her and talk briefly about the incident. She told me she had not meant to offend but felt she needed to be truthful about her stand. She said she felt like she started off a bit awkwardly in her response but felt like she "finished strong."

Addition Poems

I just learned a new poetry form called an addition poem. I say it's a new form for two reasons: 1. I had never heard of it before and 2. I couldn't find any info on the internet. I wrote some instructions at:
How to Write an Addition Poem

I have written one addition poem in response to a challenge at:

An addition poem about solitude and loneliness written for National Poetry Month

For Mother's Day

Mother's Day is not far off. If you are looking for some gift ideas or for some Mother's Day poetry -- look no further!

Depending upon your budget in today's economy, you may not be able to give your mother prizes and trips, but here are some ideas for things you can do to make her feel like a queen for a day on Mother's Day.

Everyone is thinking about the economy these days, especially those who are laid off or unemployed. If a tight budget is threatening to put a damper on your Mother's Day celebration, consider these ten ideas for celebrating an inexpensive Mothers Day.
Mothers are not perfect, and many children are scarred for life by mental, emotional or even physical abuse at the hands of their mothers. However, I have learned forgiveness is both a choice and a gift.

Mother's Day is right around the corner. Do you know what you are going to give your mother this year? As someone who has worked in retail for many years, I have had the opportunity to help people the right gift for their mothers

Faint Ray of Daylight

Faint ray of daylight announces the dawning,
Lights the horizon, filling the sky.
Gone is the darkness, banished the shadows;
The sun has risen and reigns on high.

Faint ray of hope through the night of the ages -
Dawn of a greater Light, Lord Adonai.
Gone is the darkness, banished the shadows;
The Son has risen and reigns on high.

The Dove Awards and The American Idol Connection

The Gospel Music Association's annual Dove Awards are upon us, and it is interesting to note that four former contestants from "American Idol" are up for Dove Awards: this year Ruben Studdard from season 2, Mandisa from season 5, and Chris Sligh and Melinda Doolittle from season 6 have all been nominated for Doves. This has really piqued my interest in the connection between gospel music and "American Idol," so I have done a series of articles on different web sites looking at gospel artists who got their start on "American Idol."

The Dove Awards and The American Idol Factor
The Dove Awards are upon us, and this year four former contestants from "American Idol" have been nominated: Ruben Studdard from season 2, Mandisa from season 5, and Chris Sligh and Melinda Doolittle from season 6 have all been nominated for Dove Awards! This is not the first year where American Idol contestants have been evident. Last year, Phil Stacey, Mandisa and Chris Sligh performed at the Dove Awards tribute to Michael W. Smith with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. Several American Idol contestants have gone on to sign recording contracts with gospel music companies and to perform Christian music on national tours.

American Idol alumni who have recorded and performed gospel music as well as those current contestants who have ties to gospel music include: Ruben Studdard, George Huff, Mandisa, Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey, Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle, Stevie Scott, Nadia Turner, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Scott MacIntyre, Michael Sarver, Matt Giraud, Lil Rounds, Felicia Barton, Lil Rounds, etc., and Katelyn Tarver who was a finalist on the only season of American Idol Juniors in the early 2000s.

Gospel Artists and the American Idol Factor
As a fan of gospel music, I have been pleasantly surprised to discover that several American Idol contestants have gone on to sign recording contracts with gospel music companies and to perform Christian music on national tours: Ruben Studdard, RJ Helton, George Huff, Mandisa, Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey, Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle, Stevie Scott, Nadia Turner, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Scott MacIntyre, Michael Sarver, Matt Giraud, Lil Rounds, Felicia Barton, Lil Rounds, etc., and Katelyn Tarver.

Gospel Artists from American Idol
American Idol (AI) is a popular television program which debuted on the FOX network on June 11, 2002, and has become one of the most successful shows on American television. American Idol's purpose is to discover the best singer in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. AI has produced many of today's top artists - many of them gospel artists.

No Country for Old Men - Murder and Mayhem on DVD April 7

On April 7th, No Country for Old Men: Collector's Edition will release on Blu-ray and DVD from Miramax Films and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment release. No Country for Old Men is a set in the desolate wilds of West Texas in 1980. Tommy Lee Jones stars as Sheriff Ed Bell, from a family of lawmen. Although Ed Bell is apparently the hero of No Country for Old Men, he is only in about 1/2 of the scenes and is never involved in
any action. The film's action revolves around Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), who is a welder hunting near the Rio Grande. Llewelyn stumbles upon a circles of shot-up vehicles and corpses and finds a dying Mexican who asks for water. He also finds some bricks of heroin in the back of one truck. Realizing that he has found a drug deal gone bad, and that someone must have made it out alive, Llewelyn sets out to find the last man. New Movies Arriving on DVD This Week!

Christian Horror Movie House Comes to DVD on April 7

Based upon the 2006 Christian fiction horror novel House co-authored by
writers Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker, the controversial Christian
horror film House releases on DVD on April 7, 2009. Jack (Reynaldo Rosales - TV's "Inconceivable," TV's "The 4400") and Stephanie Singleton are a couple in crisis following the tragic death of their young daughter. On their way to a marriage counselor in Alabama, they have a strange encounter on the road with a policeman (Michael Madsen - Reservoir Dogs, Free Willy). A few miles down the road when they are almost involved in a wreck, the same police-officer shows them a shortcut back to the interstate. Before too long,
Jack and Stephanie realize they are lost in the pouring rain...

The Tale of Despereaux with Matthew Broderick Arrives on DVD and BluRay on April 7

The Tale of Despereaux is an intriguing, high-caliber animated movie about
an unlikely hero - in this case, an undersized mouse with over-sized
ears voiced by Matthew Broderick. Although the movie is animated and based upon a 2003 Newbery Medal winning children's fantasy book The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread, the movie's story line will appeal to adults.

Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler Comes to DVD - Movie Review

Funnyman Adam Sandler shares the movie screen with Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, Russell Brand and Courtney Cox Arquette in this touching comic fable of an underdog whose fortune finally changes. Bedtime Stories arrives on DVD on April 5, 2009.
