Celebrating Mother's Day 2012: Mother's Day Poems, Gifts & Ideas

Mother's Day has been bittersweet for me since I lost my mother in 1991. It hardly seems possible that I haven't seen her in more than 20 years. The endless TV commercials and radio jingles remind me how much I miss my mom, but they also bring some treasured memories to mind: her laugh, her smile, the way she cared for me when I was sick, the weekend drives we took in the country when she was sick with cancer just to get away and enjoy the day.

If you have a mother, no matter what emotional baggage might come with the relationship, make sure she knows she is loved. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

Mother's Day Ideas: Queen for a Day on a Tight Budget

Many readers may not remember the old television program (which actually started as a radio show in 1945) called "Queen for a Day." The show was a forerunner of reality TV shows as female contestants had to tell real-life stories to win. The lady who won would be gowned in a red velvet robe, given a sparkling crown, and handed a dozen long-stemmed roses, and she would win other prizes and trips. The "Queen for a Day" program always ended with the words, "Make every woman a queen, for every single day!"

Mother's Day: When Forgiveness is the Best Gift

Mother's Day is the time we celebrate our mothers, and I took it completely for granted for much of my life - while my mother was still alive.

A New Puppy in the House

Thirty-six days after I lost my much beloved Miss Katy on March 16, I brought a new puppy home. I missed having a happy, bossy little dog trotting through the house, demanding attention (and treats), doing tricks, chasing me and and filling my life with laughter.

Three days after I first saw his photo, I brought him home with me. Yes, it will be inconvenient to train a new puppy, and I have already cleaned up one mess, but I miss every inconvenient moment I ever had with Katy and am looking forward to all the cleanups and coming home early to let the dog out. If this sweet little puppy is half the companion Miss Katy was, I will be truly blessed.

So far my other dog, Shelby, and my new rescue cat, Annabelle, have taken him in stride, and puppy just LOVES Shelby. I could tell that was when puppy felt at home, when he met Shelby.

I still miss my Katy, but it is so nice to have a warm, soft, fluffy puppy asleep in my lap again. He hasn't told me his name yet, but I figure I will know it in a few days.

I now understand why happily married men remarry so soon after their spouses die. A good companion is hard to find and can never be replaced, but it is too hard to go on alone after you have had a really good companion. You have to try again. Life is too hard without love and laughter.

Here's to Miss Katy, the sweetest, funniest and most gentle  dog that ever lived. I have already told this new puppy all about you, and I know he has caught your scent still in the house and in the Jeep. I will see your sweet and happy spirit in everything he does.

MTAC Anime Convention in Nashville: Anime Display, Fashions & More!

The MTAC Japanese Anime Convention took place this past weekend in Nashville, and I spent part of the day there on Saturday, taking in the sights and sounds while catching up with friends Patricia Alice Albrecht, Samantha Newark and Tony Bradshaw. Here are a few highlights.

One of the many interesting booths at the MTAC Japanese Anime Convention in Nashville April 6 - 8, 2012, was the Iota Soul booth which introduced new characters and a new story line to the anime and manga fans.

Life Goes On

After having 3 1/2 really bad weeks since losing my little dog Katy (I have cried every day since Katy died), yesterday I was covering the MTAC Anime Convention, and one of the ladies I had done some PR work for mentioned Katy, and I started weeping on the spot.

The house has just been so empty and quiet without her, but I have business meetings and life to attend to, and even though I have taken my B12 vitamins every day,  jogged almost every evening with Shelby, and prayed, I just wasn't moving past the grief like I should.

So, on the way home from the convention, I saw a Cat Rescue and paid $20 for a slightly homely adult cat no one wanted. She had been on her last day at the pound several months ago, and a group rescued her, but they couldn't find anyone who wanted her. Poor cat had been shuttled from foster home to foster home. Since we were both sort of shell shocked and at loose ends, I figured we would be good company for each other.

I can never replace my Miss Katy, and Annabelle is about her polar opposite: not much personality, not nearly as cute, very independent and a cat to boot. That's about perfect for where I am.

I had tossed Katy's little green bed that I carried her in when I took her to the vet on her last day into the back of my Jeep, because I couldn't bear to look at it. That's what I carried Annabelle home in, and although I had a bigger bed at home better suited for her, Annabelle prefers Katy's little bed. So it is now Annabelle's bed, and it isn't empty anymore, and neither is my house.

Robert Frost once said, "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." And so it does.
