Dog Dreams

I had the most lovely dream last night. I think this is the first time I have blogged about a dream, but this one was so nice, it made my day. If you have read my blog fairly regularly, you know I lost my beloved companion of 17 years, my sweet little papillon dog Miss Katy.

Her death was very hard for me to take. I had thought she was making such great progress and was lulled into a false sens of security by my vet, and distracted by almost losing my business website. I didn't take her little symptoms seriously and I lost her.

A month later, I got Jack, a little male papillon with bandit eyes. It was either that or go in for serious grief counseling. I have grown very fond of Jack who reminds me so much of my Katy, but is very much his own man. He has helped me heal, but 3 1/2 months after losing Katy, I still miss her terribly.

Last night I dreamed Jack and I were back home at the house my father built in Brentwood, TN back when Brentwood was a cow town with one gas station, a hardware store, a drugstore and Nobles Retsaurant and Hotel. That is the house where I spent 7 years of my life - the longest I had lived in one location growing up and my parents lived there until they died. If any place is home to me, that house is.

So in my dream I had Jack there, and my family was in the background, not prominent in the dream but present. It was raining outside and through the sliding glass door of the family room I thought I saw a little dog. Jack was safe in his kennel (Jack doesn't have a kennel, this was strictly a dream kennel) so I went outside to see if it really was another dog. Sure enough, right on the edge of my mother's garden stood a little dog out in the drizzle. I brought her in and of course it was Katy. I took her to Jack's kennel and let Jack out so they could played together.

In the dream Katy was a "new" dog and had never grown sick or died. I was so happy to have two papillons and knew Katy belonged to me and that we were now all home. The dream left me with such peace, a peace which lingered most of the day.

This is the 3rd dream I have had of Katy. The night Katy died I had a similar dream of Katy and my cat of 20 years, Tiffy, running and playing in a beautiful meadow of flowers. It's a meadow I visited in Switzerland in 1977 and the prettiest field of flowers I have ever seen. The 2nd time I dreamed of her she was in the back of a silver SUV when I traveled with 2 friends to church on a snowy night. When we got out of the SUV, I tucked my red travel blanket around her to keep her warm.

I guess you can read all sorts of things into dreams and I typically don't try to interpret them, but in this case I think the message is clear -- Katy is safe, she is happy, she is warm... Katy is home.

Another Hot Nashville Day

Another hot summer day in Nashville!

I waited until it was 100º outside before I went jogging. The tepid breeze made it feel like a balmy 99º. I will be glad when this heat wave is over!

103º and Rising!

It was hot in Nashville today and going to get hotter! According to Yahoo weather, we hit 103º and a friend took a photo of her thermometer at 108º

It was still in the 90ºs at 9:00 tonight. I am sure thankful for air conditioning and fans!

Military Chaplains Are Losing Freedoms

Although the U.S. Military fight and die to uphold freedom, high-level military chaplains report they are increasingly being denied freedom of conscience and freedom of speech. There is also alarm about the negative effects on troop morale over the undoing of the 237-years’ practice of providing traditional religious support for U.S. soldiers.

Exclusive beauty secret: occlusion therapy for brown spots

After years of sun exposure, sun bathing, using tanning beds, and outdoor activities, the skin begins to show the signs of sun damage. Even a few minutes a day outdoors without sunscreen: driving, walking from your car to your house or office, getting the mail, walking to the subway — it all adds up over time and causes brown spots, melasma, dullness, wrinkles, and fine lines.

Hillsboro High School 40th Reunion Memories

Recently, the Hillsboro High School Class of 1972 held its 40th high school reunion on the 40th anniversary of the exact date we walked out of the Hillsboro High School Gym as graduates. Through some fluke, although my parents and brother continued to live at the same address for more than 20 years after I graduated, I never got an invitation to a reunion in the past. This year was special, because I was actually added to a Facebook group where I was informed about the reunion in plenty of time to plan for it. After 40 years, I was finally officially invited to a class reunion!

In attending the Friday night and Saturday night events, I realized what it was I had been missing out on all these years. I had no idea that I would enjoy talking to people I barely knew in high school so much or how much I would cherish catching up with old friends I haven't thought about in years.

In high school, popularity, clubs, academics, sports, special interests, and other things tend to separate students into cliques that think they have little in common with other classmates. But by the time you hit your 40th reunion, you realize what a rich commonality you share of hometown memories, historic events, music, pop culture and growing up during the same years. High school differences have evaporated with the passage of time.  Jocks are no longer jocks, the cheerleaders have gained a few pounds, and the nerds now rule the world. Time is the great equalizer.

My class survived the transition from the 60s to the 70s: the first year of busing, Vietnam, marijuana, ABBA, David Bowie, mini skirts, short shorts, Watergate, hippies, and tanning way too much. Father's Day became a national holiday the month we graduated. We not only shared many of the same classes and teachers, we shared the same world events. Now we look back on those high school days that often seemed so very hard and so confusing with nostalgia.

Some of our classmates did not survive the 40 years since we graduated, and that also tied the rest of us closer together as we looked at their photos and acknowledged how fragile life is.

One of my classmates posted eloquently about his feelings following our reunion, saying,
"You go to your home town and you are suddenly surrounded by the same crowd of people who enveloped you decades before on a daily basis – and there is something incredibly powerful about that... You see changes in the environment, and you see differences that age has wrought in the people you knew; but you also see the fresh-faced kids they once were, and through them - for one, ephemeral flash of time - you visit your own youth, and all the hope, and possibility, and heartache that youth involves. And it is hard to let that go."

So I don't plan to let it go. I am going to embrace all the hope, and possibility, and heartache until our 50th reunion. Half a century since graduation -- just one short decade away.

Update on Eric Roper & Landmark Construction of Nashville

My bathroom still has no wallpaper, no fixtures &  a hand mirror thumb-tacked to the wall - since June 2011

The situation with Eric Roper and Landmark Construction of Nashville, TN, just gets odder and odder.

A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by a woman whose older parents are pursuing legal action against Eric Roper and Landmark Construction because she says he performed the same kind of sloppy works with the same basic crew (Kenny and Frank) on her parents' house in 2010. I believe her parents suffered water damage during the Nashville flood as I did under my house. In my case it was followed by subsequent massive water damage when my washing machine hose burst in the night a few months later and pumped some 2500 gallons of water into my house.

Like he did with me, Eric reportedly informed this family he was a licensed contractor. As he did with me, he allegedly told this family he would bring the documentation "another day" and never did.

They were reportedly told Kenny, Landmark's guy who botched a dishwasher installation and a tile job for me, had been fired in 2010 for botching their job, which also included a very bad tile job. However, this woman told me that after supposedly firing Kenny, Landmark did not finish the work or provide a refund, so she is working with her parents and a Nashville attorney to bring legal action against Eric Roper and Landmark Construction.

And after Landmark fired Kenny, there he was -- Kenny - the "fired" workman -- doing an equally negligent job on my house and tile a year later!

Talking to this woman's attorney was illuminating. He informed me yet another person had contacted him about Eric Roper of Landmark Construction pulling the same kind of stunt and this third person also plans to bring legal action against Eric Roper through a different attorney, with whom I have also spoken. That makes three people with the same complaints about Eric Roper and Landmark Construction. What are the possibilities there might be others out there that Eric Roper may have defrauded who have not stumbled upon me yet?

Eric Roper has not returned my calls since January; my adjuster says he won't return calls from Farmer's Insurance; and Stan Burchette at Tennessee Consumer Protection says he has not been able to reach Eric Roper or Landmark Construction by phone for several weeks, either.

The Facebook page for Eric Roper no longer mentions Landmark Construction. Now Eric Roper lists DWC Construction of Nashville, where he says he is a supervisor. There's a problem with that. Eric Roper needs supervision - legal supervision. He has left me with an unfinished, poorly done job and taken the money he was paid in advance and stopped working or returning calls. And from what two Nashville attorneys have told me, there are at least two other people who are either currently taking legal action or planning to take legal action against Eric Roper in 2012 for the same thing.

Are we spiteful or malicious in wanting our jobs finished in a professional manner or our money returned? No. We are victims of both natural disasters and an unscrupulous contractor, and we need our homes finished so they are livable. We can't afford to hire other contractors to complete work Eric Roper was already paid in advance to do.

Unfortunately, in my case, the few thousand dollars I might recover would not cover my legal fees, so unless I go to Small Claims or General Sessions, my only other options are reporting Eric Roper to the Department of Consumer Affairs, which I have done, and reporting Eric Roper to the Nashville Better Business Bureau, which I have also done. The Board for Licensing Contractors says Eric Roper is not licensed, contrary to what he tells people, so I will file a complaint there as well

My situation remains unresolved. In my case, Eric Roper took advantage of a single woman with a back disability nearing retirement age who had recently lost her job when the store where she worked closed. He knew I had very limited resources, yet he took advantage of me anyway and refuses to finish the job, return the money or even return my calls. That's just wrong.

Snapple Makes a Sucker Out of Me

Don't get me wrong. I like Snapple tea. I buy the Snapple Peach Ice Tea several times a year when it's on sale. I particularly like the fact that although at 39 grams it is relatively high in sugar, Snapple does not contain high-fructose corn syrups

Recently it was on sale at Publix, so I brought home three 6-packs of Snapple All Natural Peach Tea (it was a buy 2, get 1 free deal). I noticed a little graphic at the bottom of the label that said "THE FINALE" next to a star.

I found a star under one of my Snapple bottle caps, and got a little excited, so I read the label more carefully. The label said "Find a star and you could attend THE FINALE" and on the side it said if you found a star you could win a trip to the America's Got Talent Finale "or other great prizes."

If your cap has a star, you're a winner!

Turns out, the Snapple tea bottles have stars under some lids -- and I am betting under lots and lots of bottle caps -- with  numerical codes. You have to go to Snapple.com to redeem your code. Once there, you have to register on the site, giving them the kind of info I DO NOT LIKE TO GIVE OUT: email, name, age, address, phone number...

And those other great prizes? Not so great: a Hulu one-month trial; a coupon for Snapple, a Snapple screen saver, and a Snapple calendar. The only one I would be REMOTELY interested in would be the coupon, and let's be honest -- it's not a "great" prize.

In for a penny, in for a pound

But my foot was already in the door. In for a penny, in for a pound, so I begrudgingly took several minutes to fill out the form just in case I won the trip. No such luck. I won my choice of the Snapple screen saver or the calendar.

I picked the Snapple calendar. At least I would GET something that way, right? Nope. It's a download calendar (my computer already has one that is much more user-friendly, thank you very much) and it promotes Snapple every day. Great for Snapple maybe, but not so great for me.

    America's Got Suckers

Snapple, you make people like me feel like idiots for being suckered in by your promise of "great prizes," and the prizes are almost all Snapple promotions. We waste our time giving you info we don't really want to give you, and you offer us stuff we really don't want to get in return. Shame on you, Snapple, for fooling us, and shame on me for knowing better and still filling out the registration.

To add insult to injury, one of my bottles was only 1/3 full. The seal was fully in tact -- I checked -- and there was no sign of leakage on the cardboard container. The bottle was simply missing about 2/3 of its tea.

I ask you, Snapple, if everyone with a star is a winner, then why do I feel like such a loser?

Leave a comment below if you were also suckered by the Snapple Star promotion.
