One Million Page Views on Yahoo! Voices

I took this screen shot earlier this month when I hit 1,000,000 page views on Yahoo! Voices.  I have a nice "trophy" to go with it.

I started writing for Yahoo in 2008 when it was Associated Content, making $1.50 for every 1,000 page views my articles received. As I wrote more articles, they gradually attracted more viewers. At different levels, I earned a few more cents per page view. At 1,000,000 page views I have now reached the highest level of  pay -- $2.00 per 1,000 page views.

Obviously, Yahoo is not going to make me rich, and I have averaged $30 or $40 a month there. However, occasionally an older article will suddenly pull in a bunch of page views and I will have a really good month. August is going to be my best month ever, not because each month my payment rise, but because I had three old articles take off and pull in a bunch of page views.

Months like this make it worthwhile financially. The rest of the time I write because I'm a writer. What else am I going to do with my time?

Movie 'Growing Up Graceland' examines faith of Elvis Presley - Nashville Gospel Music & Entertainment Examiner

The King of Rock & Roll came from humble, Christian roots. Born and raised in the Bible belt and baptized at First Assembly of God Church in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley grew up singing in church. (Gospel According to Elvis). Now a movie is going to be made that examines the faith and spirit of Presley based upon the book Conversations with the King: Journals of a Young Apprentice.

Another Nashville Hiking Meetup - This Time at Warner Woods Trail

Jack and I joined four other hikers from the Nashville Hiking Meetup to enjoy a nocturnal Warner Woods Trail hike at 7p.m. on Monday, August 27, 2012 for a hike. Jack and I actually went to the wrong entrance and so were late getting to the meeting place, and I jugged for over a mile with Jack in a pet carrier pack trying to catch the group. The trail is 2.5 miles long, so I finally wore myself out just as it was getting dark.

I put Jack down and slung the pack over one shoulder and we continued walking. We caught up with a group of 3 girls which I hoped was the Meetup group. The girls were not part of the Meetup, but they had seen the group pass them earlier. I didn't have the energy to jog further and by this time it was really getting dark. My flashlight had fallen out in the car, so I tagged along with the girls who were nice enough to share their light with me.

Soon we saw flashlights ahead of us, and sure enough, it was the Meetup group starting their second time around the circle to make it 5 miles. I got to chat with them for a minute and snap their photo for an article, but I told them I had worn myself out jogging trying to catch them and had no energy left for another loop!

It was a fun adventure from start to finish, even though I was not with the Meetup group for most of the hike. Jack and I had fun trying to catch them!

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon, Dead at 82

Portrait of Astronaut Neil Armstrong, commander of Apollo 11 mission

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died at age 82.

I well remember being fascinated with the news coverage for weeks in advance of the historic first manned flight to land on the moon, and I still have the childhood scrapbook I kept of the momentous occasion packed away somewhere. Even at my young age I knew history was being made, and by keeping the scrapbook and watching the event on television, I was part of that moment on July 20, 1969.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 and he died on August 25, 2012 from complication from surgery on August 7, 2012, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

Besides being a NASA astronaut, Armstrong was also a test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, United States Naval Aviator.

Neil Armstrong will always be remembered as the first person to set foot upon the Moon and for the quotes:

  • "The Eagle has landed."
  • "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"

Outlaw Country Canned by FX, Pilot Finally Airs

I was an extra in the pilot for the FX Network program "Outlaw Country," starring Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes in 2012. I was in a fair scene shot at the Dickson County Fairgrounds in October of 2012.

Mary Steenburgen

Described as a modern drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime, the "Outlaw Country" series was filmed in Nashville but was canned before it ever aired. However, the "Outlaw Country" pilot finally aired on FX as a television movie on Friday, August 23, 2012, starring Mary Steenburgen and Hayley Bennett as mother/daughter country music singers.

Koinonia Family Reunion 40th anniversary concert to be held Nov. 2, 2012

Koinonia Family Reunion 40th anniversary concert to be held Nov. 2, 2012
Anyone who lived in Nashville in the 1970s, 80s or 90s probably heard of Koinonia Bookstore on Music Row and maybe even attended a concert or two. Those who hung out at the Christian bookstore and coffeehouse in the 70s have special memories of the birth of a new kind of music, for it was at Koinonia Bookstore and Coffeehouse that much of the contemporary Christian music genre was born.

I Can Jog a Mile!

Tonight I jogged a mile for the 3rd time in my life. The first time I jogged a mile was around the beginning of August, and the 2nd time was last week, so I am only starting to be able to say "I can jog a mile."

Growing up, I read, I climbed trees, and I played with dolls. I was outside a lot, and I did run through the woods near the lake where we lived, but these were short bursts of running followed by lots of walking and contemplating nature. As I child, I could sit still for long periods studying ants, or examining flowers, or looking for mica in the slate and shale rocks near the lake.

In 6th grade, however, I flew around our little playground at Una Elementary and won a ribbon for running, so in 7th grade I tried out for track. It was a rude awakening to discover I was the slowest girl who tried out and the only one who couldn't run all the way around the track. I failed so miserably and was so deeply mortified, I never thought of myself as a runner again, but that all changed last year.

After moving to a tiny room in a Microtel hotel when a washing machine hose burst in the night and flooded my house in 2010, my tiny dog Katy became deathly ill and could no longer see, hear or walk. I had to painstakingly nurse my fragile little girl back to health which meant I had to stay in the cramped Microtel room with her almost 24/7. After a month or so I realized I was slowly turning into pudding, so I started jogging in place in the Microtel, just 200 steps at a time at first I was so out of shape.

By the time we moved home, little Katy was doing somewhat better, so I began to take her to our local park to let her walk a few feet and enjoy the smells. Then I would put her in the car and walk a lap or two myself. One leg of the track runs downhill, so I began to jog down that side for 1 lap, then 2, 3, and 4 laps. By the time I was jogging downhill for 4 legs, I figured 4 legs equaled a lap, and I should start running 1 lap. Soon my little dog and I were both in better shape.

Tonight as I started my 5th lap, I remembered when jogging one lap was so difficult last year -- much harder than jogging five laps is now. It was only a year ago that I started jogging for the 1st time in my life. Today I jogged a mile.

It is with a feeling of accomplishment and deep satisfaction that I look back on my slow start into jogging and fitness. It took me over 50 years to become a jogger, and I started by jogging in place 200 steps in a Microtel hotel.  Now I can jog a mile. I feel better than I have in 30 years, and I wonder how many of those girls who outran me in 7th grade could outrun me now.

As the commercial says, "JUST DO IT."

'The Lucky One' with Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling & Blythe Danner on DVD - Movie Review - Yahoo! Voices

'The Lucky One' with Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling & Blythe Danner on DVD - Movie Review

"The Lucky One" starring Zac Efron ("High School Musical"), newcomer Taylor Schilling and Blythe Danner (all the Focker films, grandmother of Gwyneth Paltrow) is a 2012 romantic drama movie that releases on DVD on August 28. I had not heard of the movie nor the book upon which it is based, and the film had already been on for 20 minutes when I caught it at a friend's house. Within 10 minutes, I asked if the movie was based on a Nicholas Sparks book.

This is not your High School Musical Zac Efron!

D'oh! A Deer!

I saw a deer outside my window again yesterday, so I grabbed my camera and tried to get a few shots.

Then two more deer came out of the woods.

Fortunately, there was several deer this time who slowly walked by my window, including one little bitty fellow who looked a bit like Bambi. At least the pics turned out better than last time!

Puppy Love: Jack the Puppy Gets a Girlfriend

Jack walking Molly
Jack, my 6-month-old papillon puppy, has a little girlfriend. Molly is an older woman...er...dog, a 5-year-old Malti-Poo who walks in the same park where we walk, and Jack is crazy about her! This is their story.

Good golly Miss Molly!

You never know where romance will find you. In Jack's case, it was walking in the park to keep fit and get his daily dose of puppy exercise that did it.

It started innocently enough with Jack admiring Molly from afar a month or so ago. Oh, he noticed the cute little Malti-Poo temptress alright, but he was too nervous to approach her.

Jack would cautiously check Molly out as she walked by, and hop back a step or two if she looked at him. But watching Molly sashay past with her sassy walk and her little pink halter top proved too much temptation for Jack, and he fell into puppy love.

And they call it...puppy love...

Now Jack just can't get enough of Molly. In his efforts to impress her, he leaps in the air, rolls over, pounces, rubs his front paws together and tries to give her kisses every time they are around each other. Molly coyly steps back, turns away, and pretends to ignore him, causing poor Jack to redouble his efforts.

However, if Jack turns away from Molly for a second, she demurely comes a little closer batting those little Malti-Poo lashes at him and giving him a flirtatious sniff. What a tease!

Jack is smitten, that's for sure. If they lived in Mayberry, Jack would definitely take Miss Molly to the Duck Pond.

Jack & Molly

In most of the photos I tried to take, they are just two silly blurry blobs, because they just WON'T sit still for the camera! Well, Molly would, but Jack is too busy showing off for his favorite little Malti-Poo vixen to sit still.

Pictures don't do them justice.  They are adorable together. I guess that's why they call it puppy love.

Watch Jack walk his other friend, Shelby:
