Stronghold Kingdoms Video Game Review

Stronghold Kingdoms Castle Sim Global Realm 4 entry screen

Firefly's Stronghold Kingdoms castle sim is a fun and frequently exciting medieval game of building, trading, strategy and warfare. This is definitely a game that works the brain.

For my Stronghold Kingdoms review, I would give the game five stars except for the unfortunate fact that the game is full of annoying bugs that make the in-game mail system ridiculous and negatively impact other aspects of the game.

Stronghold Kingdoms Bugs

These Stronghold Kingdoms glitches include, but are not limited to: disappearing scouts, pitch that can’t be laid, catapults that, when placed, might prevent your forces from attacking, and other glitchy game problems.

The game must frequently be restarted to get rid of the numerous annoying glitches. In addition, other players cheat, and although Firefly does make an effort to deal with it, these unfair activities continue and sometimes make the game more of a challenge for those who play by the rules.

None of these problems have been enough to stop my enjoyment of the SK gaming experience. I have played on three Stronghold Kingdoms servers so far and moved eagerly on to the next new server as soon as it opened while continuing to maintain my castles on the old servers. The glitches simply ensure I am rarely 100% satisfied with Stronghold Kingdoms gameplay.

Stronghold Kingdoms Game Play

The game consists of several interesting activities that make it a fun gaming experience.

  • VILLAGES: Gamers start by building a tiny village. As they add new buildings, the village grows and produces more industry. Different village types produce different goods.
  • TRADING: As industry grows, markets can be added to buy and sell goods. This earns gold which can be used to acquire goods.
  • CASTLES: As the village grows, SK players also build a castle for defense. This requires wood, Stone, Iron, and pitch which can be produced in some village types or purchased in the markets.
  • PARISHES: Stronghold Kingdoms players also have the option to vote themselves in as steward of the local parish. This can be a peaceful situation, but if the parish already has a steward, it can lead to war.
  • WARFARE: This can be a game of peaceful building, but in Stronghold Kingdoms, warfare is part of the game. As mentioned, taking a parish from another player can lead to warfare. So can joining a faction or a house that another faction or house takes issue with. In addition, having played in three English servers, I have observed that language problems from non-native English speakers in the English servers can create misunderstandings that lead straight into war.
Stronghold Kingdoms is free to download, and can be played on mobile and computer, depending on the server. The Global Realm servers, for instance, are for mobile play.

Game play is slightly easier and less time consuming with the purchase of tokens. A reasonable amount to spend in 2019 is $8 a month, less than the cost of one movie or one meal in a restaurant each month. However, some Stronghold Kingdoms diehards spend $100 a month or more on cards and tokens to get the maximum advantage over other SK players.

What girl doesn't want to be a princess???
I played Global Realm 3 all the way to Crown Princess without spending a dime, choosing to play it as a game of strategy rather than pay-to-win. In GR 4, I opted for the $8 monthly token to save a little time on building, researching, scouting and trading.

If you like medieval times and games that involve building, strategy, and trading, I highly recommend Stronghold Kingdoms. The game is so popular, it has spawned gaming groups on Discord, Line and other apps. Some groups have even built websites. I just hope that while the Stronghold Kingdoms gaming community is busy killing wolves and enemy forces, that Firefly is busy killing all the bugs.

For my Stronghold Kingdoms review, I am giving it 4 stars. ****
