Dear Comcast, Google Fiber Is Looking Better All the Time

Image
Dear Comcast, You are doing a GREAT JOB selling Google Fiber! After the Nashville Flood, I have worked hard to rebuild my life and pay off my flood debts. I started a new business and thankfully, it is meeting my needs but I decided to take on a tenant to help me rebuild my nest egg. My soon-to-be tenant was a Comcast user, and he arranged to have his service transferred here  THE BEGINNING OF APRIL before he moved in the middle of the month. I was on hand the week of APRIL 13 to meet the Comcast technician when he came out. The technician quickly informed me that he could not do the installation because the line would have to be connected over some tree tops. He said a cable would have to be laid. He called Comcast and explained the problem and I heard him say it would be scheduled for APRIL 24 . I asked him to hand me the phone while Comcast was still on the line, and I explained to the Comcast representative that my upcoming tenant was a computer programmer with a b...

Why I Removed Myself from Angie's List & Requested a Full Refund

Image
How Angie's List failed abysmally to live up to their hype. A couple of months ago, I signed up for a 3-year subscription to Angie's List in the hopes of finding repairmen and contractors to help me finish repairs to my house, damaged after the Nashville Flood. I was hoping for a long-term relationship, hence the 3-year enrollment, because the Angie's List ads sounded like this would be a great option for an older single woman. Make Hiring A Breeze With Our Reviews. Home Improvement Made Easy! I found the contractors on Angie's list no more reliable or professional and certainly no more reasonable than what I had found calling out of the phone book. However, what made me close my account and ask Angie's List to remove all my information was the disturbing experience I had with One Call Home Team and Angie's List's very minimal assistance in the matter. After being talked over by a pushy woman on the phone who was trying to talk me into a "...

One Call Home Harassment -- When Angie's List Goes Horribly Wrong...

Image
Angie's List is not living up to expectations. On July 8, I called One Call Home Team via Angie's List. I explained my previous contractor disappeared for 3 1/2 weeks and then showed up wanting to be paid for the incomplete work, so I was looking for a company to finish the job and fix the parts that had not done correctly. I didn't mention that I had discovered he had liens out against him and was not insured or licensed as he had claimed, but I digress.... The woman went on and on about their company's do-it-yourself assessment that involved taking photos and measurements of the area to be repaired, filling out a form with a description, dimensions, etc, . When I tried to explain that I am not a contractor, am not sure what needs to be done to finish the project, and am not in a position to do the self-serve estimate for several reasons, she talked over me, asking me why I couldn't do this and that, and couldn't I estimate the square fo otage, etc. Sh...

Happy TOOTHday to Me? When Dental Work Goes Wrong

Image
Today is my birthday, and I  just had a disappointing discussion with my dentist office, Bellevue Dental. What a way to celebrate! On Aug. 17, 2013, I went in to see Dr. Gross about a crown she said I needed due to a cracked tooth. She asked if I was having any pain in the tooth and I said no, but she said it needed a crown to save it. I suspected my days working at Sears were numbered at the time due to layoffs, so I opted to have the crown put on while I had a part-time insurance plan since I have been on such a tight budget following the Nashville flood with all the resulting home repairs. The tooth was X-rayed on Aug. 17 and filed way down. An impression was taken, then a second one when the first one did not turn out well, all of which was quite painful. I had to wear a temporary crown for a week or so while I waited for the permanent crown to come in.  Dr. Gross said it was one of the deepest crowns she had ever done, but in hindsight I wonder -- was it too deep??...

Where Is the Landmark Construction (Nashville) Tile Guy?

Image
Once again I have wasted part of a day waiting for Landmark Construction in Nashville to show up to finish the small kitchen tile job they were hired to do in July of 2011 and started on November 3. It's been one delay after another since then, with one mistake after another added in for good measure. As I mentioned in my last post , when I asked the tile guy on Monday if he thought the 3 bad areas I found after the tile was laid were all the bad places, he said, "Oh yes. Those were the 3 places I found when we were laying the tile, so that was all of them." What? They noticed the three areas with missing and cracked drywall BEFORE they laid the tile and just put the tile up with large bad areas behind them hoping I wouldn't notice? The tile guy was supposed to finish this job on Monday and Tuesday of this week after repairing the drywall on Monday, but didn't have enough tile to finish the job, so he didn't come on Tuesday and had to come back on Wednes...

Electrical Issues in My Kitchen May or May Not Be Fixed

Image
My kitchen wall where appliances were removed during pack out Landmark Construction sent an electrician out today from Electric Bill's to check the mystery electrical problems I have experienced since the oven was put in incorrectly and the wiring was fried. He was nice as he could be, but I couldn't help but notice he would say one thing to me and another to Landmark when he had them on the phone. For instance, when I described the oven problems and he took a look at the old oven he said since I had such a major water issue that water/moisture could have easily gotten into the circuitry which he described as being housed in little "pockets." He said water could have not only have accumulated in those pockets and caused some corrosion to any exposed metal parts all the months the oven sat unused, but it could also have washed particles of grease and debris into the circuitry which might have accounted for some of the smoke I saw. Later when he was talking to L...

How to Lose Your Car to a Car Repair Shop Without Defaulting on a Bill

Image
This photo is just a Wikipedia picture of a Toyoto. My little Toyota Corolla was a lovely champaign color and was a four-door. It had a lot of my father's belongings in the trunk and some of my own belongings in the glove compartment -- all legally taken by Oil Change Plus in Nashville. How to Lose Your Car to a Car Repair Shop Without Defaulting on a Bill In the late 1990s, I had a car stolen - legally by an automotive service and repair business called Oil Change Plus in Nashville. Although this happened in Nashville, Tennessee, from what I have learned, it could happen anywhere. Electrical Shock: Trip Charges, Drive Time, Hourly Rates and Other Ways Electricians Pad the Bill

Image
I had two Nashville-area electricians at my house most of the day on Tuesday and again for 1/2 hour on Friday, going over my electrical system. I had electric problems in 3 parts of the house, some as a result of the Nashville flood . I showed them the three specific areas where I was having issues with the power, but after they left, I discovered I still could not turn on the lights/ ceiling fan in one of the rooms. I had to reschedule an appointment for Thursday, and after waiting all day, they called and said it would be "sometime" Friday before they could get there. They finally came back around 5:00 PM on Friday. The electric company originally charged me a $25 trip charge on Tuesday to drive 1 mile from a business in Bellevue to my house, and then added the drive time which somehow ended up being around 15 minutes for a 3-minute drive. Today I called to discuss an adjustment with the owner due to the fact his guys never looked at a room I walked them to and specif...

Analog to Digital TV Conversion Problems Continue; FCC Passes the Buck

Image
If you follow my blog, you are aware I have been without television since June 12 when I lost my analog signal. I have tried everything from purchasing two converter boxes, to a new antenna, to an adapter, to finally breaking down and buying a new digital TV, and nothing works. I get no signal. As a matter of fact, MILLIONS of low income, unemployed, retired, or other Americans on fixed incomes don't have TV now. Even more are making decisions to put television service above home repairs and medical expenses because we count on our televisions for weather alerts. Here in Tennessee it is vital during our lengthy spring and fall tornado seasons, as well as for other weather alerts and crisis information. I have made four request to the FCC phone hotline to send me the complaint forms they tell me they send out to people like me. After four requests since May, this week I received a glossy, full-color booklet telling me all the advantages of going digital - still no complaint forms....

Digital TV Blues

Image
I am so frustrated with the converter box issue, and after the scare when I went to the park and the tornado sirens went off while the dogs and I were there, I made the ill-advised decision to purchase a digital TV set today. I will start with the positive - it works better than the converter box, but the negatives are lengthy: 1. I had to buy my new digital television on credit 2. I had to also purchase a new antenna 3. It looks like I don't get any signal at all for most of the day 4. In the early evening I start to get a broken, pixilated image off and on which is very difficult to try to watch and even harder to listen to 5. I can get some signal later at night but it is still choppy and isn't reliable. 6. I only get one channel, just like before with my old analog TV. So, I am still without reliable television reception, and now I have spent money on a new TV I should have applied to home repair or health issues. However, I did get to watch some of the Farrah Fawc...
