Happy Father's Day 2015

Image
My father and me  My father would be 105 if he were alive today. Although he has been gone for many year, and I am now a woman of 61, I still miss him very much. If you still have your dad, make peace, make up, and tell him you love him. Happy Father's Day! Father's Day Haiku How everlasting Are the bonds between fathers And their little girls. -- Kathryn Darden This poem is part of a larger collection of stories and research for an  upcoming biography of William A. Darden —a man in whose footsteps I still follow. The narrative traces an extraordinary arc from a Nashville childhood on Fatherland Street to the classrooms of Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech, to Sundar Nagar, India. A veteran of WWII, Darden’s life remained deeply rooted in the history of the family home at Tick Hill and his wife’s family legacy at Ransom Place. This project goes beyond the uniform to uncover the man himself, moving from the halls of Central High to the final years in Brentwood. To be notif...

Journey to the Sea - Poems Inspired by 'The Lord of the Rings'

Image
A Man like You & Journey to the Sea Kathryn E. Darden ,  Yahoo Contributor Network ~ A Man like You  ~ A poem about temptation and the corrupting influence of power inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Witchking in "The Lord of the Rings" Once I rode a pony small; I sat upon my father's knee. My mother sang fair lullabies And placed her warm arms around me. My father said, "Be strong! Be brave! And strive to win whate'er you do." I scarce remember, just in dreams That once I was a man like you. Once my father passed away, And I ascended to the throne, My mother said, "Be strong. Be brave, And make this kingdom now your own." I took the sword. I chose the blade And wielded it to claim my due. At least it seems thus in my dreams, When once I was a man like you. Once a noble came to me Austere he looked in raiment grand. Reading the desires of my heart, He placed the future in my hand. To me ...
