The Beatles: How They Changed American Culture in My Small Community - Yahoo

The Beatles land in the U.S. -- 1964 Yahoo writers were asked to look back and give a first-hand account of how the Beatles changed American culture. This is my story: The Beatles: How They Changed American Culture in My Small Community It was Feb. 9, 1964, and all the 9-year-old girls in Falls Church, Va. , were talking in class about the "Ed Sullivan Show" on TV that night. I had heard a few Beatles songs but until then had never thought about them. That night I watched something else instead of joining the largest audience ever recorded for an American television program, but the next day it was in every paper and every news show. Beatlemania and the British invasion had begun. Life in a Washington, D.C. Suburb at the Time of Kennedy's Assassination - Yahoo

Image
For the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, I was asked to write a first-hand account of what life was like during the time of President Kennedy's assassination for Yahoo in 300 words or less. These are my memories. My father, Col. William A. Darden, a career Army officer, was stationed in Washington, D.C., which is what brought us there. It was a remarkable and unsettled time, both for our family and for the country.  Life in a Washington, D.C. Suburb at the Time of Kennedy's Assassination -Yahoo Lake Barcroft, just outside Washington, D.C., was a middle-class suburb home to many military and government families in the early 1960s. My  father  was stationed at the Pentagon and with the Bureau of Yards and Docks, so our family was affected by events in the nation’s capital. The Campus on the Ridge On November 22, 1963, I was a young girl at St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia, in the Northridge area. At that time, St. Agnes Episcopal Scho...

Marilyn Monroe: 50th Anniversary of Monroe's Death

Image
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson)  June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962 August 5, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of actress Marilyn Monroe. Fifty years after her untimely and somewhat mysterious passing, Marilyn Monroe continues to be as iconic as she was in the 1950s and 60s. In memory of Marilyn Monroe, these are some of the articles I have written about Marilyn Monroe: Health & weight: How big was Marilyn Monroe & what size dress did she wear? A strange mythology has sprung up over Marilyn Monroe's dress size. For decades I heard Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 back in the 1950s. However, in more recent years, Elizabeth Hurley (2000) and Roseanne Barr (1996) have claimed Monroe was a size 16.
