Cookies for Kids will be hosting two holiday book signings for me in Nashville during the Christmas season to benefit the charity Special Spaces (Specialspaces.org). The organization has been given a storefront at Hickory Hollow Mall where they will sell gourmet cookies, do gift wrapping, and other special activities including my book signings! I will be signing copies of my books The Mayberry Poem - A Tribute to Mayberry and How to Promote Your Book on a Shoestring Budget on Wednesday night, December 17 at 5 PM, and on Monday afternoon, December 22 at 2PM. Cookies for Kids is located in the lower level of Hickory Hollow Mall near Sears in the "Real Estate" store front. I just received a letter from one of the submitting poets asking if he could get a discount since three of his poems were published in the the Mayberry poetry book (actually, only two were published; we declined one). Don't get me wrong -- usually I am the person negotiating for a discount! However, I have had people raise eyebrows at the cost of the books before. I think shoppers are used to buying trade paperbacks with lots of pages for $7.99. They look at a book which is larger but with fewer pages and think the $12.99 price tag is high. To put things in perspective, I sent him the following note. Actually, more poems = more formatting and more pages printed = more cost to print, so the more poems I run from one person, the more they have increased my costs. That's one reason many publications charge a "reading fee" or "submission fee" for each poem submitted. I had a pleasant time at Mayberry Days this year in spite of the rain. Hurricane Kyle brought drizzles most of the day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but by Saturday evening the rains appeared to have ended, and Sunday was beautiful for our drive out of Mount Airy. For those who don't know, Mount Airy, North Carolina, is the childhood home of Andy Griffith, and one of the primary inspirations for the fictitious town of Mayberry. Every year the town hosts Mayberry Days during the last full weekend of September. Book sales to Mayberry Days visitors were low this year, but I did well selling to local stores, so I only brought six books home with me. I am supposed to have another 20 books on their way. My friend Chevy did her superb Daphne impression and I was her sidekick, Skippy, this year. I got to wear my mother's vintage mink stole for the Mayberry Days parade, which made the occasion all the more special for me. We had delicious meals at local Mount Airy restaurants like...
