 Fall is well underway in 2024 bringing fall colors, falling leaves and a cool breeze after a long, hot summer. The 16th annual Día de los Muertos took place Oct. 24 at Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Belle Meade. The popular Latin American family celebration was filled with activities including live performances, an international marketplace, food trucks with Latin cuisine and interactive art activities for everyone. Translated as “Day of the Dead,” Día de los Muertos is a day-long celebration for Nashville’s Hispanic population as well as for families throughout the area. The colorful festivities included face painting, shopping, watching the Aztec dancers, eating Mexican food at the food trucks, live music, coloring skull masks, interesting dolls , and enjoying the beautiful grounds all decked out for Cheekwood Harvest with flowers, pumpkins and scarecrows. The weather was overcast but nice and crowds of all ages certainly enjoyed the festival. I enjoy going to some of these fall festivals in Nashville every year. I love Oktoberfest and the events at Cheekwood as well as some of the music events. 2012 Nashville Fall Festivals A Tennessee autumn is a beautiful sight, especially in Middle Tennessee's wooded areas and hills and East Tennessee's mountains. Fall in Nashville presents a myriad of colors as the leaves change to reds, golds and yellows amidst the green and brown leaves and the orange of pumpkin patches. I don't know what the rest of the month has in store, and rain is predicted this week, but so far, this has been a perfect November. Never have I seen such beautiful colors in Nashville -- and they have lasted so long! When I was a child of 5, my father was stationed for a year at Fort Dix, New Jersey. I remember some things about it vividly. We had recently returned stateside from India. The first months passed without leaving much impression; then suddenly, it was FALL! Never had I seen such beautiful colors as on the hillside behind our house. I remember collecting maple leaves and being entranced by their bright colors, and by the smell of the autumn leaves. Those days were full of delight for me, enjoying the vivid colors, and spending as much time outside in the woods as possible. That's what this fall has been like for me. Autumn took a wrong turn; Colors we rarely see In Tennessee - How the hillsides burn! New England's bright edge Seen in each tree and hedge, And bronze pumpkin sedge. Still the colors remain - A glorious stain Until the next rain. As each autumn returns I know I will yearn For sights such as these: Crimson, scarlet reds, Seen in each tree and hedge - How it pierces my heart!
