Astronaut Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon, Dead at 82

Portrait of Astronaut Neil Armstrong, commander of Apollo 11 mission

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died at age 82.

I well remember being fascinated with the news coverage for weeks in advance of the historic first manned flight to land on the moon, and I still have the childhood scrapbook I kept of the momentous occasion packed away somewhere. Even at my young age I knew history was being made, and by keeping the scrapbook and watching the event on television, I was part of that moment on July 20, 1969.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 and he died on August 25, 2012 from complication from surgery on August 7, 2012, to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

Besides being a NASA astronaut, Armstrong was also a test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, United States Naval Aviator.

Neil Armstrong will always be remembered as the first person to set foot upon the Moon and for the quotes:

  • "The Eagle has landed."
  • "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"
