What Is Going on with the Homeless Situation in Bellevue?
Why has there been a noticeable surge in panhandling and unhoused individuals congregating across Bellevue the past several years???
Recently, I watched a vehicle drop at least three men off at the intersection across from the Shell station on Highway 70 South. As I waited at the light, I watched one immediately head to a familiar spot on Coley Davis next to the station, another walk toward the I-140 exit, and the third go inside the Shell station itself. Where did they come from, and who brought them here?
This isn't an isolated incident. At times, individuals have set up camp with their luggage next to the CVS at Bellevue Plaza. Down near Dollar Tree, people regularly wander behind the building, through the store, and down into the nearby creek bed. I used to walk my dog in that area during the evenings, but I now make a point to go before dark out of concern for my personal safety.
Local business owners and staff report feeling equally strained:
Retail Security: A former manager at Dollar Tree recounted ongoing issues with property theft and store disruption.
Private Security Costs: A pharmacist at CVS and manager at T.J. Maxx shared similar frustration, noting that the strip center eventually resorted to hiring private security officers because response from law enforcement has been virtually non-existent and patrons no longer feel secure.
Traffic Hazards: Just today, after driving through the McDonald’s drive-thru, a woman was standing directly in the middle of the entrance lane, attempting to flag down incoming cars and blocking traffic. When I parked, she hollered and approached my vehicle, prompting me to lock my doors and roll up my windows. The McDonald’s manager confirmed he had already called the police regarding the driveway being blocked, but reported that no officers had arrived.
According to local store management, calls to dispatch often yield no response, leaving private property owners and customers to navigate these encounters on their own.
Besides the safety factor, trash from these individuals has become another issue. There are frequently piles of trash left on the sidewalks by these individuals. I have watched them leave their litter and amble away. I see them leave bags of trash in front of businesses and even in shopping carts.
What is the city’s actual plan for addressing public safety and regional displacement in Bellevue? Residents and local business owners deserve clear answers—and a real response—from our local officials.
Construction at Bellevue Place
What is all the construction going on at Bellevue Place across from Jonathan’s? Parking has been fenced off of different areas for months. According to employees there, new electric charging stations are going in at the end of every row of parking.
Bellevue Farmers Market
Bellevue’s Farmers Market is held every Thursday night at Red Caboose Park from 4 to 7 PM. Organic produce, crafts, local businesses, music, food and more can be found.
